Hoefl Riesch wins Slalom in Are

Maria Hoefl-Riesch came from third to win the last regular season Slalom in Are, Sweden. A devastatingly smooth middle section of the second run gave Hoefl-Riesch the impetus to home of for the win ahead of Veronika Zuzulova and Marie-Michele Gagnon on the podium. Zuzulova had been leading after the first run but a number of small errors saw her lead ebb away on the second run and lost out by just one hundredth of a second. This was Hoefl-Riesch’s twenty third World Cup win and eighth in Slalom but the first for fourteen months.

“I was so lucky with the hundredth. I feel so sorry for Veronika – she never had a win before – and she’s such a great skier,” Hoefl-Riesch said after the race. “It’s bad luck for her but good luck for me.” Hoefl-Riesch had been hoping to win at least one slalom this season she had admitted before the race started and so was both relieved and happy with the win.

With the weather indecisive with wind and storms mixing it with the sun, Hoefl-Riesch managed to her composure and make the finish without the problems that saw Lindsey Vonn crash out on the second run.

Anna Swenn-Larsson, one of the rising young stars on the HEAD World Cup Rebels technical team, put in a personal best in the Slalom World Cup with ninth equal place, just under four tenths behind the race winner. Anne-Sophie Barthet took a three way share of 17th to join Maria Hoefl-Riesch, Lindsey Vonn, Anna Swenn-Larsson and Sarka Zahrobska in going to the World Cup Finals next week in Slalom.
