Streitberger delivers first podium for HEAD in Garmisch Downhill

February 23rd, 2013

Georg Streitberger delivered his first podium placing as a HEAD World Cup Rebel in the Garmisch Partenkirchen World Cup Downhill. Streitberger, starting at the end of the top thirty seeds was fast from the top yet had to settle for second at the finish behind Christof Innerhofer but ahead of Klaus Kroell. Aksel Lund Svindal made fifth place but as the season is now drawing to the business end of the season his eyes are now looking at the Overall and he admitted he was looking for a win.

For Streitberger this was, in the opinion of HEAD World Cup rebels' race manager, Rainer Salzgeber, a deserved result after all the problems he had had at the beginning of the season. “I attacked in the middle of the course where it was really difficult. I made no big mistakes and that was really important,” he added.

After the training runs had been blighted by fog, the start being moved around and other weather issues, Streitberger was delighted with this performance, paying huge emphasis on the work put in by his service team.

To make a podium had been Streitberger’s big goal this season, he explained after the race: “Today it was a good run, in the first sections, a perfect run, so I hope I can do this more often.” Having been just over half a second ahead of Innerhofer’s split at the top, Streitberger was looking good for a maiden Downhill win. Streitberger knew he had made a mistake on the ‘Icefall’ section and this may have cost him the win but was still happy with second.

For Aksel Lund Svindal, things are now getting tight in the race for the Overall. This is what every multi discipline racer aims for and knowing that the number of races left to the end of the season is roughly the same for him and his main rival, Marcel Hirscher, every race counts: “I am trying to win every race now,” he explained after finishing fifth, “but if fifth is my worst result, I will be happy with that.”

Svindal has now moved back into the lead in the Downhill standings for the season.
