HEAD player Filippo Volandri of Italy defeated Nicolas Lapentti of Ecuador 5-7, 6-1, 6-3 to win his second ATP title and his first at the ATP Palermo International in Sicily on Sunday, Oct. 1.
Volandri was runner-up in the last two years in the Palermo final, losing the 2004 final to Igor Andreev and in 2005 to Tomas Berdych. Volandri, ranked 38th, became the first Italian winner in Palermo in 22 years, when Francesco Cancellotti beat Miloslav Mecir in the 1984 final.
After turning professional in 1998, Volandri won his first ATP title at St. Poelten, Austria, in 2004. He became one of the top 50 ranked players of the world at age 22 and reached a career-high ranking of 28 in 2005. Volandri plays with the HEAD Flexpoint Prestige MP.
