Fenninger leads clean sweep of the podium for HEAD.
Anna Fenninger was the only racer that Maria Hoefl-Riesch was not worried about in terms of denying her the opportunity to make her 25th World Cup victory on her home slope. It was Anna Fenninger from a start number of 22 that deprived Hoefl-Riesch of the win, something that Fenninger apologized for after the race. Julia Mancuso, looking for her first World Cup win of the season and one that would help her in the race for the Super G Globe, had taken the lead but had to be content with third.
With this being at the business end of the season, this clean sweep by the HEAD World Cup Rebels was the first by any ski brand on the world cup this season. Julia Mancuso came into the race looking to make inroads on the deficit to Tina Maze in the Super G standings. 65 points with two races to go was the difference and when Maze came down a quarter of a second behind Mancuso, the difference was going to be less, the question was whether other racers could make it between the two.
Mancuso likes Garmisch with its fast turns and steep pitches. The gnarly slope is to her liking and she has won here in the past. She took the lead in the finish yet Maria Hoefl-Riesch soon took it away. Hoefl-Riesch was looking for her 25th World Cup win and admitted that with three opportunities to do it, she had hoped to make it at home. Hoefl-Riesch did her best to make the dream come true with a fast, attacking run but when Anna Fenninger came out the start; the crowd could sense that all was on a knife-edge.
Fenninger has won in Giant Slalom this season and has spoken often of her desire to win a speed event. This was to be her day. While she apologized for denying her good friend the landmark win, the win meant a lot to her as well.
Mancuso has closed in on Maze’s lead but with one race to go, she will have to hope others do her a favour in Lenzerheide at the World Cup Finals if the Globe will head home with her.
