With temperatures dropping as low as -18 degrees, and equipment failing from the cold, 13 year old freestyle snowboarder Becky Menday from Waddesdon, Buckinghamshire, England, took first place in the second leg of the World Rookie Fest held in Avoriaz in France. Not only did Becky take 1st place in the under 14's category, she also had the highest female score of the competition placing her in 1st place in the overall TTR Ranking.
Becky who is an 'Elite Junior' on the GB Freestyle Team had an outstanding fluid, styled run: This consisted of a front 360 with an fs grab, a straight air nose grab, a Huge tweaked out method grab, and a back 360 off the last table top kicker. Finishing off on the last two rail features with a front lip board slide and a nose press on the bonk feature.
Becky scored 130 points for her winning run a clear 5points ahead of her next rival.
Becky said " I was so pleased to be first, I was already really happy with my run, but too not only be on the podium but first overall was so exciting. I was disappointed to fall on my first run, so I just wanted to pull everything off on my second run".
This fantastic result has seen Becky's TTR World ranking move to 50th place overall women for slope style. She has also now guaranteed a place in the World Rookie Fest finals in Ischgl In Austria in April. But before that she has the Burton European Open in two weeks and the British Championships in Laxx still to come.
The weekend was a good one for the girls in the GB team with Maise Potter taking 3rd in the Groms (3rd place overall) and Natalie Silkstone taking 2nd in the rookies (5th place overall).
Becky said " I love having the opportunity to compete in Europe, as I get to meet other girls from all over Europe and this time as far away as Chili in South America".
