Vonn places third in Moscow City Event Dual Slalom
Lindsey Vonn added to her points tally from the season with third place in the Moscow Dual Slalom. Although not a regular event on the World Cup Tour, the City Event Dual Slalom events are fast becoming a popular event with both the racers and the crowds. The dull and dreichy conditions did nothing to dampen the excitement that the top racers in the world cooked up for the watching crowds. Despite both Vonn and Maria Hoefl-Riesch losing in the semi finals, both racers were happy with the event.
The City events are designed to capture the imagination and appeal of the city dwellers and bring skiing to the masses. With the top fifteen racers on the World Cup Tour getting tickets to race (plus one local racer), the racers fought a knock out system down an 18 gate course. The short course was nothing like they have on the regular tour yet appealed to the racers for its originality.
Both Vonn and Hoefl-Riesch fought their way through to the semi finals yet Vonn came up against her countrywoman, Julia Mancuso and lost both legs, crashing on the first; Hoefl-Riesch won the first leg against Michaela Kirchgasser but lost the second and was out.
In the small final, Vonn got the upper hand on Hoefl-Riesch to capture more points in the race for the Overall Title. Vonn overhauled a three tenths of a second deficit on the second run to capture third place! "My last run against Maria was my best run of the day," Vonn said. "I'm really excited to be on the podium.”
Lizz Goergl, Anja Paerson and Anna Fenninger also both qualified for the event but were knocked out in the opening heats. Although this was the 72nd podium of Lindsey Vonn’s career, it was her first in the parallel events!
