Vonn captures win number 57 in St Moritz

Lindsey Vonn edged closer to yet another record in winning her second Super G of the season in St Moritz. This was a gutsy and aggressive run by the HEAD World Cup Rebel and when she crossed the finish line, the fire was there for all to see: This result meant a lot to her, the clenched fist and roar said she was back in the race for the Overall. “That’s what I am talking about,” she roared in the finish area. Tina Maze scored another podium and Julia Mancuso made it two HEAD World Cup rebels on the podium.

St Moritz is a hard slope for the racers as it is all above the tree line and the weather plays a larger than usual role. The weather Gods shone for Lindsey as she blasted out of the start with the sun starting to break through. Better visibility means the racers are more confident at the high speeds.

With Maze the first of the top seeds to go, she took the lead. With Vonn going at 21, the script was set and with the green light all the way down, Vonn was able to banish the frustration of coming out in the Super Combined slalom section. Maze’s coach had set the course and Vonn had put in a faster time than his charge. “I did not ski it totally clean,” Vonn commented afterwards yet had been aggressive and had let the skis run.

“Records are what inspire me as that is what I will leave behind,” explained Vonn after the race, “yet for now I stay focused and will just take it day by day.”

With the Super G World Cup very tight and close, Julia Mancuso was delighted to be on the podium yet again. “I am enjoying things in Super G at the moment, another podium is good but I just need to work out how Lindsey is that bit quicker,” explained Mancuso after the race.

Maria Hoefl-Riesch made it three HEAD World Cup Rebels in the top five yet was slightly disappointed with the technical aspects of her run as she placed fifth.

The win moves Vonn up to third with Maria Hoefl-Riesch in second in the race for the Overall Title.
