Lindsey Vonn breaks the record for most points by a female in a season
Lindsey Vonn admitted that slalom has “been a struggle” for her this season yet by scoring 32 points she surpassed the record set by Janica Kostelic in 2006. In a race that was won by Michaela Kirchgasser, Vonn finished in joint 8th place with Maria Hoefl-Riesch. With the record of Kostelic and also that of Hermann Maier (2000 points) playing on her mind, Vonn was happy to have crossed this hurdle though the focus remains on the Maier record. “I do care about this record,” she admitted after the race, yet the race for the last remaining 20 points to go ahead will come to a head in the final race of the season in the Giant Slalom.
Vonn has scored her points through hard work and winning races: The HEAD World Cup Rebel currently has twelve races wins across four of the five World Cup Disciplines this season and a further five podium places as well.
With the possibility to win the Giant Slalom Crystal Globe up for grabs in the final race of the season, Vonn expects a tactical race to develop depending on the start numbers and also on starting position for the second run. With points only being awarded in the Final’s races down to fifteenth place, Vonn reflected on the feeling of “I must get to the finish” if she is to overcome the 2000 point barrier.
Anywhere in the top 13 will secure the points required for the record; only first will suffice for the Globe with Rebensburg 16th or worse.
The season has been long and tiring and Vonn is now looking forward to the Giant Slalom being the last race of the season. The soft snow and the warm weather will played its part in the Slalom and will play its part in the Giant Slalom. “I will go as hard as I can but I will have to ski smart,” Vonn explained.
Whatever happens in the Giant Slalom Vonn has no regrets over this season: “I will keep working hard and will look to break more records.” But most of all she admits that she will “keep having fun!”
