Laura Massaro triumphs at US Open

October 11th, 2011

HEAD’s 2011 British national squash champion Laura Massaro has lifted another major honour, with the 27-year-old winning the US Open Championship in Philadelphia with her YouTek 135.

The Britain, ranked fifth in the world, rallied to defeat Kasey Brown to emerge the winner of the WISPA World Series event. The score in the final was 5-11, 11-5, 11-3, 11-5, taking just under an hour on court.

Along the way to the title, Massaro upset No. 1 Nicol David in the quarter finals and put out HEAD teammate Jenny Duncalf (YouTek 135) in the semis. Massaro takes a fresh load of confidence into the World Championships in Rotterdam later in October.

Massaro keeps piling up the squash honours, beating No. 1 David twice in 2011 and earning the Commonwealth games silver medal in women's doubles a year ago in India.

“At the start I didn’t feel as comfortable as I had in the previous matches, my legs felt heavy and I felt a little sluggish, but I just told myself I had to forget that. I got a few good rallies together and I felt good and played well after that”, Massaro said after the match. “I can’t believe I won, it’s been a great year for me with three major victories. The Nationals is always up there and I was very proud to be the first Lancashire woman to win it. Beating Nicol in Cleveland was big, but this is the biggest of them, a major event on a glass court, they don’t come much bigger than this!
