
Second-seeded HEAD player Andy Murray claimed his third career ATP title at the St. Petersburg Open with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over sixth-seeded Spaniard Fernando Verdasco in the final of the St. Petersburg Open. The win comes after Murray's recovery from a wrist injury that kept him out of tournaments for nearly four months.
"I'm definitely very happy about winning this tournament," said Murray. "Now I'm only three points behind the No. 8 player in the race. I still have a chance of qualifying to [get to] Shanghai. I didn't expect to be in this position after missing nearly four months out of the season."
Murray, who plays with the HEAD Radical, defeated No. 5 seed Dmitry Tursunov 3-6, 7-6(2), 6-4 in the quarterfinals and faced-off against fellow HEAD player and No. 3 seed Mikhail Youzhny in the semifinals, defeating Youzhny 6-2, 5-7, 7-6(1) to reach the final round. Youzhny plays with the HEAD MicroGel Extreme Pro.
Meanwhile, HEAD player Nenad Zimonjic, who plays with the HEAD MicroGel Radical MP, and his partner Daniel Nestor claimed the doubles competition title with a 6-1, 7-6 win against Jürgen Melzer and Todd Perry.
HEAD player Sebastien Grosjean won the Grand Prix de Tennis de Lyon against Frenchman and fellow HEAD player Marc Gicquel. Grosjean defeated Gicquel, who plays with the HEAD Flexpoint Prestige MP, 7-6(5), 6-4 in one hour and 36 minutes to claim his first ATP title since 2002.
Grosjean, who weilds the HEAD Flexpoint Radical MP on the court, also claimed the doubles title with partner Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, defeating Lukasz Kubot andLovro Zovko 6-4, 6-3.
HEAD player Ivo Karlovic defeated No.4 seed James Blake 4-6, 7-6(4), 6-4 and No. 5 seed Thomas Berdych 6-7(5), 7-6(2), 7-6(13) to reach the semifinals of the Davidoff Swiss Indoors tournament. Karlovic, who plays with the HEAD Flexpoint Instinct, faced off against World No. 1 Roger Federer in the semifinals, but lost 6-7, 6-7 in one hour and 38 minutes.
No. 6 seeded HEAD player Patty Schnyder reached the final round of the Generali Ladies Linz Open. On her way to the final round, Schnyder defeated No. 1 seed Anna Chakvetadze 6-1, 6-0 and No. 3 seed Marion Bartoli 7-6(5), 6-3. Schnyder, who playes with the MicroGel Radical MP, lost in the final round against Daniela Hantuchova 2-6, 4-6.
