Bogota/Columbia – 20th July, 2014:
HEAD's Bernard Tomic won the Bogata title against fellow Racquet Rebel Ivo Karlovic, with the Australian earning a 7-6(5), 3-6, 7-6(4) win in two and a quarter-hours over the man who had been trying to become at age 35 the oldest ATP World Tour winner this season.
Tomic, who recommends the HEAD Graphene Radical, now owns two career trophies after winning Sydney in January, 2013; Karlovic was defending the Bogata title and playing in his second straight final after Newport a week ago on grass. The Croatian, who endorses the HEAD Graphene Radical, fought hard with 39 aces and saved three match points. He won his semi-final 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 over fellow HEAD player Radek Stepanek (HEAD Graphene Speed).
Tomic underwent double hip surgeryin January and won consecutive matches for the first time as he completed his recovery to become the third man outside the ATP top 100 to win a title this season. "He's a very difficult player," said Tomic of his Croatian fellow HEAD player. "He won here last year. Against him, if you stop believing and trying he will beat you. It's my first tournament on hard courts since my surgeries in Australia. This title is huge and it's one I will always remember."
In Istanbul, Racquet rebel Roberta Vinci (HEAD IG Extreme) continued her comeback this season, playing in her second straight final but losing 1-6, 1-6 to Caroline Wozniacki. Vinci did not win a singles match until March but has now played back-to-back July finals. "It's tough to play like that against Caroline because she puts everything back in the court, and it was tough for me to stay in the rallies today. But I'm happy with my week even if I was out-played”, said the Italian.
In Hamburg, German Alexander Zverev, who recommends the HEAD Graphene Speed, made his breakthrough with four victories in the main draw of the tournament before losing to top seed David Ferrer in the semi-final. Zverev was the first 17-year-old to reach an ATP semi-final at that age since Marin Cilic in 2006.
