Soderling Shocks His Way Into French Open Semifinals

HEAD player Robin Soderling continued his dominance on the court with yet another upset at Roland Garros with a 6-1, 6-3, 6-1 victory over No. 10 seed Nikolay Davydenko.

The No. 23 seed, who plays with a MicroGel Radical MP, got off to a fast start in the tournament stringing together two solid performances against David Ferrer and World No. 1 Rafael Nadal, beating the four-time champion in four sets and ending his perfect record at Roland Garros.

“I tried to stay focused in each match and remain on the top of my game,” said Soderling. “While I am excited to have made it to the semis, I have my work cut out for me if I want to win a Slam.”

The victory marks the first time the 24-year-old Swede has made it to the semifinal round of a Grand Slam in 21 appearances.

In other tournament news, World No. 3 Andy Murray out together a string of solid performances to make it to the quarterfinals, where he was upset by Fernando Gonzalez 6-3, 3-6, 6-0, 6-4.

On his way to the quarterfinals, Murray bested fellow HEAD player No. 13 seed Marin Cilic 7-5, 7-6(4), 6-1.

In women’s competition, HEAD player Victoria Azarenka reached the quarterfinal round where she faced World No. 1 Darina Safina. Despite a strong effort, Azarenka was defeated in the competition 1-6, 6-4, 6-2.

HEAD pro Svetlana Kuznetsova also achieved success at the tournament reaching the quarterfinal round and will face World No. 2 seed Serena Williams today.
