To say players from HEAD Penn simply “doubled” up on the competition at the 2012 USA Racquetball National Doubles Championships would be an extreme understatement. Just a week after battling it out in the final of the International Racquetball Tour (IRT) event in Salt Lake City, Ben Croft and Rocky Carson (pictured) teamed up to win their first United States National Doubles Championship as a duo. For Croft, the win in the desert capped a whirlwind span of eight days that brought him his first IRT Tier One tournament victory and his first National Doubles Championship.
In the finals of the USA National Doubles Championships – held at the Student Recreation Center on the campus of Arizona State University – Croft and Carson defeated fellow HEAD Penn player Shane Vanderson and his partner 15-7, 15-4. To reach the finals, Croft and Carson knocked off another pair of HEAD Penn teammates in the semifinals. Charlie Pratt and Tony Carson took the eventual National Champions to a tiebreaker before falling 15-4, 10-15, 11-6.
With the win, Ben and Rocky have earned one year appointments to the USA Racquetball National Team Pool. The US National Team will next compete at the 2012 International Racquetball Federation’s (IRF) World Championships in August in the Dominican Republic.
All five HEAD Penn players compete on the IRT and will return to professional action at the end of February in San Diego. Carson and Croft hold down the No. 2 and No. 3 current ranking spots on the IRT. Vanderson, Pratt & Carson sit in the No. 7, No. 8 and No. 9 spots, respectively.
