Two HEAD titles at Kolkata - Anastasia Myskina triumphs in singles and doubles

September 27th, 2005

It was Myskina’ s first title of the season and the tenth career Sony Ericsson WTA Tour triumph. “It is very special to win this title because it’ s been neatly a year since I won a tournament,” Myskina said. “I really want to be in the Top 10 at the end of the year, so this will obviously be good for my ranking.”

From the first round with a 6:1, 6:0 over Edina Gallovits from Romania, the No 1 seeded Myskina was looking strong all over the tournament, betting Galina Voskoboeva (Russia) 6:0, 6:1, Shikha Uberoi (India) 6:4, 6:2 and Kaia Kanepi (Estonia) in the semi-final 6:3, 6:1. In the final, Myskina started off strongly, coming to a 4:0 lead and taking the opening set 6:2 in 24 minutes. In the second set she was forcing Karolina Sprem into numerous errors, attacking her backhand and overpowering her with an array of ground strokes, taking the second in 36 minutes. “I think I played very well all week,” Myskina said, “and I think I maintained a good level against all my opponents.”

In the doubles, Myskina teamed with countrywoman Elena Likhovtseva to win a second title within some hours. In the final they have been dropping just a single game to win their first title as a team 6:1 and 6:0 against the sister duo of Neha and Shihka Uberoi. It was Myskina’ s third win in a doubles competition.
