
HEAD player Dmitry Tursunov defeated U.S. player Andy Roddick 17-15 during the Davis Cup semi-finals last Sunday. The 23-year old became a hero as he won the Russian Team a place in the Davis Cup finals for the first time in four years.
Other semi-final highlights included Marat Safin’s win over Andy Roddick 6-4, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) and Mikjail Youzhny win over James Blake 7-5, 1-6, 6-1, 7-5 on Friday, putting Russia ahead 2-0. With this victory, Russia will play against Argentina in Russia for the 2006 Davis Cup final in December.
Tursunov turned professional in 2000 and in 2006 he achieved the highest ranking in his career. Although Tursunov does not have an ATP title under his belt yet, he made his first ATP final in Los Angeles in 2006, losing to Tommy Haas in three sets. Tursunov is an aggressive baseliner known for his quick wit and sense of humor and preference to play on faster surfaces. He dominated the court with a HEAD Flexpoint Prestige.
