HEAD racquet rebel Novak Djokovic continues his total domination of the 2011 season as the world No. 1 overcame Rafael Nadal 6-2, 6-4, 6-7 (3), 6-1 to win his first US Open title, his fourth career Grand Slam title.
"It really seems unreal, it’s an incredible feeling", said Djokovic after the match. “This amazing year just keeps getting better. Every time I play Rafa it’s a big challenge. I hope we have many more tough matches in the future."
Djokovic secured the title in what turned out to be an epic battle lasting four hours and 10 minutes, with the top seed taking treatment on his left lower back which he injured late in the third set. But the physical niggle only seemed to spur on the HEAD star as he finished with an inside-out forehand winner on first match point and fell to his knees in disbelief and joy. Djokovic broke Nadal’s serve a record 11 times, the most ever for the Spaniard in 163 Grand Slam matches.
The surging Serb who has crushed the competition this season with his YouTek IG Speed MP claimed ten titles in 2011 with 64 wins and just two losses. NO.1VAK now owns the titles at three of the four Grand Slams this season, after winning the Australian Open and Wimbledon earlier this year. The 24 year-old is only the sixth man in the Open Era to win three Grand Slam titles in the same year.
"This is one of the four biggest events in our sport”, Djokovic commented. “It’s a pleasure to be one of the few players who has lifted this trophy. I couldn’t do it without the team I love and respect so much."
