Tursunov Claims First ATP Title

October 5th, 2006

Russian HEAD player Dmitry Tursunov claimed his first ATP title in Mumbai this week. Tursunov defeated Czech Tomas Berdych 6-3, 4-6, 7-6(5) in the final match. With the win, Tursunov is now in the Top 20 of the INDESIT ATP Rankings for the first time in his career.

Tursunov is also the 11th first-time title winner on the ATP circuit in 2006. The title run included back-to-back victories over top seed Tommy Robredo in the semifinals and third seed Berdych in the final.

“I was up two breaks in the third set and still went to the tie-break, so it was definitely nerve wracking, but I'm really happy that I won and just really hope that it won't go into a tie-break in the third set in a final again,” said Tursunov who plays with a Flexpoint Prestige MP.
