HEAD Players Advance at Roland Garros

HEAD Pros enjoyed success last week at Roland Garros in Paris, France.

Local hero and HEAD Player Gael Monfils advanced to his first Grand Slam semifinal with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 victory over fifth-seeded Spaniard David Ferrer in the quarterfinals. Monfils, who plays with the HEAD Flexpoint Prestige Mid, went on to face Roger Federer in the semifinal round.

“I want to play my game,” said the 21-year-old Frenchman who came back from a knee injury in March. “I'm very happy I'll play a semifinal on the central court, I am hugely motivated.”

In the women's competition, HEAD player Svetlana Kuznetsova also advanced to the semifinal round after defeating Kaia Kanepi in the quarterfinals 7-5, 6-2. The fourth-seeded Russian plays with the HEAD MicroGel Extreme.

"I play really consistent,” said Kuznetsova. “I was trying not to rush too much and I was moving pretty well."

During the men's doubles competition, HEAD player Pablo Cuevas, who plays with the HEAD MicroGel Prestige Mid, and partner Luis Horna won their first final playing together. In the final round, the team won against No. 2 seed and fellow HEAD player Nenad Zimonjic and partner Daniel Nestor 6-2, 6-3. On their way, Cuevas and Horna upset the No. 1 seed Bryan Brothers with a 6-3, 5-7, 7-6(1) victory.

HEAD player Anna Medina Garrigues of Spain won the women's doubles competition with partner Virginia Ruano Pascual. The pair defeated fellow HEAD player Casey Dellacqua and partner Francesca Schiavone 2-6, 7-5, 6-4. Both Medina and Dellacqua play with the HEAD MicroGel Extreme.

Meanwhile, HEAD player Victoria Azarenka and partner Bob Bryan walked away with the mixed doubles title after a 6-2, 7-6 victory over Katarina Srebotnik and Nenad Zimonjic.
