HEAD racquet rebel Maria Sharapova has ended her 2012 season on World No. 2 in the WTA rankings. At the WTA Championships in Istanbul, the 25 year old Russian finished as runner-up, after a high class match against Serena Williams. The American, withstood a challenge from Sharapova lasting nearly 90 minutes before Williams took a 6-4, 6-3 victory.
"I've got to keep moving forward. I'm proud of my year. I'm proud of my consistency," said French Open champion Sharapova who recommends the HEAD YouTek IG Instinct. "I'm moving in the right direction in terms of improving my game. I've accomplished a lot of things this year I really wanted. I have a lot of great memories, some difficult ones, but a lot of really positive thoughts moving into next year."
Sharapova said that playing in Turkey proved to be a highlight. "The excitement from the people from the second they call your name onto the court and you're walking out is it's pretty incredible. The appreciation you have from the tennis fans is really unique."
In doubles, HEAD racquet rebel Roberta Vinci of Italy and partner Sara Errani reached the semifinals where they finally lost against eventual winners Kirilenko/Petrova 6-1, 3-6, 10-4. Vinci and Errani claimed 8 doubles titles this season including the French and US Open and will finish the season as World No. 1.
