HEAD reveals a new model of corporate carbon responsibility with COOL EARTH
Since 2007 HEAD partnered with global environmental charity Cool Earth. This partnership has resulted in a worldwide environmental program – the first of its kind for a sporting goods company.
The simple idea behind Cool Earth is that rainforests are worth much more left standing than they are cut down for timber or burnt to clear land for cattle ranching. Clearing just an acre of rainforest can emit a staggering 260 tonnes of CO2.
Cool Earth does three things:
Protects rainforest that will be destroyed, without their intervention, in the coming 18 months.
Works alongside local communities to ensure they have better lives from keeping forest standing.
Makes sure their sponsorship goes directly to the rainforest
“Keeping carbon where it belongs is the only way to fight climate change,” said Frank Field, Co-Founder of Cool Earth. “We are delighted to pioneer a new model of environmental responsibility, and with HEAD on board we will address this on a global scale.”
HEAD is the first sporting goods company to “supercharge” its carbon responsibility. The company’s CEO, Johan Eliasch, partnered with Field to start Cool Earth and has made it part of the company’s mission to fight global warming. Through the partnership with Cool Earth, HEAD is matching ten times its annual carbon emissions with avoided deforestation credits (rainforest carbon credits).
HEAD is committed to saving over 7,000 acres/28 km2 (per year) of mature rainforest from destruction -- which equals the size of more than 100,000 tennis courts or 7,000 American football fields.
“Educating sports enthusiasts about the affects of carbon emissions is an important part of why we’re doing this,” said Eliasch. “We all depend on a stable climate to ski, play tennis, or dive. If we don’t wake up and make a difference now we won’t be doing these things in their natural environments much longer.”
“I am proud to support such a worthy cause,” said Bode Miller. “Cool Earth provides an opportunity to get involved as individuals, and take a step towards saving our environment.”
Austrian ski champion Hermann Maier, who is also part of the HEAD Racing Team, agrees. “HEAD’s commitment to making a difference with a global program like this is important to me as a skier and as a citizen. I’m proud to be a part of it.”

COOL EARTH OVERVIEW
Cool Earth started in June 2007 aims to tackle the climate crisis in a cost-effective, mass membership way, long before governments are able to swing into action. It will enable individuals and groups including schools and businesses, to directly fund rainforest protection on a massive scale and safeguard this invaluable resource.
Keeping carbon where it belongs•20% of carbon emissions come from deforestation
The Stern Review and the UN regard halting destruction of rainforest as the first step in tackling climate change
And yet stopping deforestation is not recognised in any UN or government solution to climate change
Cool Earth will change this by harnessing public opinion to put a fair value on the rainforests and stop global warming
Linking capital to climate
Rainforest destruction usually earns local communities nothing and yet destroys their future income and a priceless environmental resource
Individuals, schools and businesses can sponsor as little as a half an acre of rainforest for just £35
This not only protects the most endangered forest for the long-term but funds local conservation by local people
Real action on climate change
Just half an acre will also lock up 150 tonnes of CO2 or 15 years of an average person’s emissions
Sponsors of Cool Earth can view their plot with Google Earth, get regular updates on its biodiversity and local conservation
With 6,000 supporters already signed up, Cool Earth is a bottom-up solution to climate change that leap-frogs political inertia
What does the cooperation entail?
HEAD will be securing in partnership with Cool Earth to protect 7.030 acres of highly endangered rainforest equivalent to ten times its annual emissions.
Does this mean HEAD is fully offsetting its carbon footprints?
Offsetting is not enough. As well as working to minimize our emissions, in partnership with Cool Earth, HEAD is protecting ten times its footprint. By investing in the protection of 7.030 acres/28 km2 (per year) of endangered rainforest HEAD is supercharging its carbon responsibility. This is equivalent to over 1.800.000 tonnes of CO2.
Which rainforest is HEAD protecting?
Cool Earth operates throughout the world working with Rainforest Nations globally. For this collaboration with HEAD it is protecting in danger rainforest in South-America.
What size is HEADs forest protected:
1 acre = ca. 1 American Football Field
7.030 acres equal approx. 7.030 American Football Fields
7.030 acres equal approx. 106.515 Tennis Courts
7.030 acres equal approx. 3.652 FIFA Soccer Fields
7.030 acrres equal approx. 11 times the size of London city or 1/3 of the size of Paris
When did the partnership begin?
The initative was announced in August 2007 and the rainforest protected in Fall 2007.
