Biography
The hero of a whole nation. On the 5th of February 1976, everybody in Austria held their breath. With bib number 15, Franz Klammer was the big favourite at the start of the Olympic Downhill run in Innsbruck. Everybody's eyes were on the race of the year. Franz Klammer withstood the pressure and won the Olympic Gold medal. His achievement at the home games made the Carinthian the hero of a whole nation. Franz Klammer is still the best athlete in the Downhill discipline today - he notched up five victories in the overall World Cup and 25 individual race victories. Following his skiing career, Klammer was successful in motorsport between 1985 and 1988. He competed in the DTM German Touring Series, became Austrian Touring Car Champion and also won races in the European Touring Car Championships. From 1988 to 1998, Franz Klammer participated in professional ski races in the USA.
