HEAD Penn’s Maria Jose Vargas wins Racquetball Grand Slam in Bolivia

Cochabamba, Bolivia – March 31, 2019

In the first Ladies Professional Racquetball Tour (LPRT) event held outside of North America since 2015, HEAD Penn’s Maria Jose Vargas prevailed from a loaded field to win the ‘Open Bolivia American Iris’ Grand Slam tournament.

Eight of the top eleven female racquetball players in the world traveled to Bolivia for the tournament which also featured the top professional male players. Maria Jose Vargas – who hails from neighboring Argentina – needed to win a tiebreaking game in three of her four matches over the weekend to claim the Women’s Singles title. In all three tiebreakers, she won by the score of 11-9, including the tournament’s final match.

In the Women’s Doubles competition, Maria teamed up with fellow HEAD Penn professional – and Argentinian – Natalia Mendez to win the doubles title. The duo squeezed out a tiebreaker win in the semifinals before upsetting the top seeded team in the finals. In singles play, Natalia reached the quarterfinals before being defeated by Maria.

American Rocky Carson, the No. 2 ranked male racquetball player in the World, finished as the runner-up in the Men’s Singles competition.
