For some, it’s the true surface for tennis. For others, it’s better used for cows. But one thing remains true – there are few finer sights in sport than the sight of world class tennis being played on grass.

For as long as anyone can remember, the European spring has meant clay-court tennis, when the mudlarks of the tennis world have their moment in the sun.

It has been almost 40 years since the US Open made the switch from grass (via three years on green clay) to hard courts, a move that changed tennis for good.
