A Century of Bounce, A Legacy of Performance

Discover how Penn and HEAD teamed up to smash tennis into a new era.

In the small town of Jeannette, Pennsylvania, a revolution was bouncing into existence. It was 1910, and the Pennsylvania Rubber Company, a hardworking little company founded in 1899, decided to try something new: tennis balls. Handcrafting 13,000 fuzzy spheres that first year, they had no idea they were laying the groundwork for a global tennis empire. Those early balls, stitched with care, were the humble start of Penn, a name that would soon dominate courts everywhere.

Fast-forward to the roaring 1920s, and Penn was already changing the game. They rolled out the first pressurized metal cans in 1922, keeping balls fresh for longer and making players’ lives easier. By 1960, they’d woven New Zealand wool with synthetic fibers for a tougher, longer-lasting felt. Then came 1968, when Penn debuted the now-iconic fluorescent yellow ball, a visibility game-changer that the International Tennis Federation would make standard by 1974. Penn didn’t stop there. They developed play-rated balls for different surfaces, pull-ring plastic cans, even optic-orange balls in the 1970s, truly helping them to stand out. By 1973, their Pro Penn ball was crowned the official choice of the US Professional Tennis Association, cementing their status as America’s tennis-ball king.

But the real magic happened in 1999, when Penn caught the eye of HEAD. We teamed up to combine HEAD’s sleek, high-performance frames and a hefty 20%+ grip on the global racquet market, with Penn’s impressive 30%+ share of the tennis-ball market. The acquisition was a slam-dunk deal, uniting the “stick” and the “ball” under one roof. Suddenly, Penn and HEAD could bundle their gear, share sales channels, and co-market like never before. In North America, Penn’s name shone bright. Abroad, HEAD’s logo led the charge. One company, two brands, endless possibilities.

Together, we turbocharged innovation. Penn’s century of ball-making wizardry—pressurized cans, durable felts, and vivid dyes—got a boost from HEAD’s R&D muscle. Out came game-changers like the Smart Optik felt for sharper visibility, LongPlay felt for extra durability, and the Encore™ core, promising that “play-like-new” bounce for longer. The Pro Penn Marathon, a favorite among teaching pros and competitive players, became the gold standard for durability, while HEAD mirrored these innovations with its own premium balls overseas.

From junior clinics to pro tournaments, Penn and HEAD didn’t just make gear, they shaped how tennis is played, taught, and loved worldwide. Partnerships with the USTA, PTR, Cliff Drysdale Tennis Management, and Sportime Clubs spread their influence, turning kids into players and players into champions. What started as a small-town dream in 1910 had become a global force, with Penn’s fuzzy yellow balls and HEAD’s cutting-edge racquets driving every rally, every serve, every victory. Together, they didn’t just keep up with tennis—they redefined it, one epic bounce at a time.
